Evaluation Notes

Slide One – Conventions

Psychologically Damaged Adults:

Lucas Hill who plays the villain suffers from a multiple personality disorder. Convention inspired from Psycho – Alfred Hitchcock from his character Norman Bates.

Masks:

From films such as Scream, Halloween and Texan chainsaw massacre.

More often than not the masks from horror film are iconic of the film, hence why we used the mask in the magazine cover and poster to advertise it as the “Dual Mask”.

Used to hide the villain’s identity – much like the movie Scream. Doesn’t want Alex (sister) to know and it would give away the plot which is to be revealed at the end.

Black = evil

No expression = robotic = killing machine

Final Girl:

Androgynous name – Alex…Boyish charms help her?

Plain bob hair cut

No make up

Covering, sensible clothing, trainers…blue, black and green – boy colours

Last one alive

Solves mystery

Kills villain

Glasses = geeky? Intelligent?

Shared history with the killer on a personal level = her twin brother Lucas.

Hedonistic Teenagers:

Alex’s Birthday rebels by going to woods with friends to drink alcohol.

Convention used: Hedonistic teens

Convention developed: Final girl = rebellious and not sensible.

Isolated Settings:

Isolated woods – no help

Police will take ages to arrive if called

No witnesses

Scary to watch

Dark

Lots of hiding places

P.O.V shots for those being watched:

USED:

When Alex is on the floor blooding obviously hurt the camera looks down at her creating the effect of someone watching her for their P.O.V.

CHALLENGED:

We see Lucas through trees while he’s hiding – conventionally it would be his p.o.v looking out but this is the other way around as if someone else is watching him.

Blood: ICONIC on horror films.

On Alex’s hand – we know she gets hurt

Battling with villain?

Scary

Screams:

Loud – scare the audience

Automatic reaction when scared – loud so close range people will hear and help.

Victim becomes Hero:

Alex is the victim of Lucas but in the end she kills him to therefore becomes the hero

Hand Held Shots for Chase Scenes:

Blair witch project

Doc style

Realistic

Scary

Unfinished Business with Villain Coming Back for Revenge

Her twin brother who gets abducted at young age.

He comes back for revenge as he thinks it’s his fault he got abducted

Conflict Played Out As A Battle Between Good And Evil:

Alex = Good

Lucas = Bad

Evil loses

Todorov theory ends with restored equilibrium.

Slide Three - What have you learned from your audience feedback?

1. How effective do you think the horror teaser trailer was? (1 being least effective, 5 being most)

81% of the audience thought the teaser trailer was effective.

2. How would you rate the film poster to professional film posters on a 1 – 5 scale? (1 being least effective, 5 being most)

3. How would you rate the magazine cover to professional magazine covers on a 1 – 5 scale? (1 being least effective, 5 being most)

Majority thought the ancillary tasks were professional compared to real media products. Over 80% on both thought this.

4. How would you rate the teaser trailer to professional teaser trailers on a 1-5 scale? (1 being least effective, 5 being most)

The feedback shows that compared to real media products the ancillary products seems more professional than the trailer – I think this is because it is easier to create magazine covers and posters to trailers are using moving image is a much greater, challenging task.

5. How well do you think the ancillary tasks (poster and magazine cover) relate to the trailer? (1= not closely related, 5= very closely related)

Over 80% agreed that the ancillary tasks were closely related to the trailer this is good thing as we wanted the products to be obviously matching.

“The eye isn’t that obvious, I didn’t notice it”

“I like how the eye isn’t obvious”

We didn’t want it to be obvious – we thought “film buffs” would enjoy discovering it for themselves as it might be thought provoking rather that it being blatantly obvious.
